Peer-reviewedRetinol converts to retinoic acid in the skin, where it boosts collagen synthesis and inhibits the matrix metalloproteinases that break collagen down — the mechanism behind its effect on lines, texture and tone. In a one-year, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study of stabilised retinol, the signs of photoageing improved steadily and did not plateau; a separate 24-week randomized controlled trial of 0.4% retinol significantly reduced fine wrinkles, with new collagen confirmed on skin biopsy.

Method: Peer-reviewed clinical literature on topical retinol — a one-year, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial of 0.1% stabilised retinol, and a 24-week RCT of 0.4% retinol with biopsy-confirmed collagen. Evidence for the ingredient at its studied dose, not the finished serum. Use at night, introduce gradually, and always apply SPF the next morning.
